Writing And Illustrating

about...

'The Amazing Adventures of Mike & Sal' is a writing and illustrating workshop designed for use within schools, playschemes, youth clubs and libraries.

The workshop is a fun experience within a framework of enjoyable learning objectives. It has a cross-curricular approach tailored to an individual teachers/leaders needs,

i.e. its emphasis may be on science, history, geography or social issues.

The Storyboard Project promotes skills in writing through planning,

drafting, evaluating, and redrafting, combined with areas of design,

illustration and presentation.

The characters in 'The Amazing of Mike & Sal' can do anything

that the children wish. With Mike's time machine they can travel

back in time and study a period of history and meet prominent historical figures.

Sal could show an experiment in pictorial form and give the results and conclusions as a way of recording the children's findings. The character could travel to explore, for example, the rainforests or artic regions as part of their geography studies.

Mike & Sal could also relay PSD issues, i.e. road safety, firework code

and personal health issues. Of courses all of the above projects need
information and material to get pens and pencils working,
so research skills are brought into play.

Workshops For Foundation Stage

Along with Freddie (a puppet) Nick encourages the children to share

their own insights into Personal Safety through a series of photographs

depicting places near where Freddie lives. The children then tell Freddie if

they think these locations are safe place to play with his football.

Locations include on a grassed area, with quite a few trees and by a busy

road junction used by cars, lorries and buses; by the side of a canal; on a

building site and also in a public park play area.

The session lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Key Stage One Workshop

To keep yourselves safe it is also important that others know that you are trustworthy.

That you always 'Tell The Truth'. In this workshop we act out the story of

'The Boy Who Cried Wolf!'

The main character are dressed up and rehearse their parts and then we perform

the play to CD recording complete with sound effects.

Freddie the puppet plays the role of the boy who cried wolf!

The session lasts approximately 45 mins and is limited to a class of children.

Key Stage Two - Three Workshop

The Key Stage 2/3 workshop is an Anti-bullying Workshop. The children view some

video footage of role plays in which the bully/bullies get away with it. The children then

practice these role plays and change the ending so that the bully does not get away with it.

Some strategies for dealing with bullies are discussed at the beginning of the session.

All the groups then perform their role plays for each other and discuss whether they

chose the best way to deal with the bully.

This session lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes and is limited to

a maximum of forty children. A multimedia projector is also required.
