Suddenly, the deserted platform was full
of people. All adorned in curious clothing. Flowing gowns, capes
and bizarre hats. It was almost as if the entire population of
Dreadsbury had returned home for the weekend.
Mike and Sal stood on the steps of the carriage
and waited for the peculiar crowd to disperse. As it dwindled
they noticed something weird...
...A black cat sat staring at them. As soon
as they'd noticed the cat, it looked at them and then flicked
its head beckoning them to follow. Slowly it stood up on all
fours. The station was now deserted, so Mike and Sal decided
to follow the cat as it began to promenade towards the village.
Walking into Dreadsbury High Street was like
stepping back in time. There were no pavements and no tarmac
on the road. They were now walking on cobble stones gazing at
lodges and cottages as they passed.
As they walked, following the cat, the street twisted and turned
then suddenly, in front of them, in all its majesty, was the
clock tower. It was magnificent.Looking up the clock tower stretched
high into dark cloudy sky. The great globe at the top gave off
an abnormal glow. They glanced around the square in which the
tower stood. They could see a small corner shop containing the
Post Office, a public house and Mr. Nightshade's ToyShop.
"What an unusual place to have a toy
shop?" Sal said, "You wouldn't get
many customers in a place like this."
"Sure is unusual," replied Mike,
"Ouch!"
"What's wrong?"
"Sal, that cat's just bit me." Fed up of being ignored
the cat nipped at Mike's
ankle. Once it had got their attention again it carried on prancing
down the cobbled streets."I think we'd better follow it,"
said Mike, "before it bites me again, but next time it might
draw blood."
They followed the cat carefully watching
it as it passed through the main streets and out to the other
side of the village. They followed it down a leafy, deserted
lane then the cat came to a halt and sat by a wooden gate.Through
the gateway Mike and Sal could see an over grown pathway that
led to the small front door of a peculiar looking cottage. Its
thatched roof was intertwined with all sorts of creeping plants
and branches.
