Autumn Term 1999Mike and Sal were going off to camp. Mike rang up his gang and said, "Pack your bags, we're off to camp." Sal packed her bag and Mike's too. They packed some rope, a tent, drinks, books and puzzles. Sal also packed a map. Mike said, "What do we need that for?"
"To find our way there." Replied Sal.
"What's the name of the camp?" asked Mike.
"I don't know, ask Marcus?" Marcus had forgotten that they were going to camp.
"I'm not going to go," he said.
"Why not Marcus, it's going to be fun?" said Sal.
"I'm not ready, I'm not packed."
"Come on, Marcus," Mike said trying to persuade him.
After some thought Marcus said, "Okay!"Mike, Sal and the rest of the gang set off on their bikes and skateboards. On the way they met a clown, while they were passing through a town. There was a huge crowd surrounding him as he performed. The children decide to stop for a while and watch his hilarious show. After five minutes they began to travel on their journey.
"How long is it till we get to the campsite, Mike?" He looks at the map.
"About five minutes left now Sal," he replied.
The gang arrived at the campsite. It was called Oak View. It was surrounded by woods and was very dark and gloomy. The trees looked like ghostly hands waving in the cool breeze. They went through the entrance to the campsite. They looked around for a good place to set up camp. Marcus and Sal started to put up the tents while the others emptied their bags. As soon as they had finished they went for a walk in the woods.
It was getting late, the time was 10.20. Marcus decided to go back to the camp to lite a fire to keep them warm. The rest of the gang stayed in the woods exploring. After a while they came back and sat around the camp fire and talked. They chatted about the latest Intendo computer games and which was the best. Then Sal told them a ghost story. Sal tells a really exciting and scary story. No-one wants to go to bed after that because they are frightened. But if you asked them they would say they wasn't. So, Paul, Arandeep, Marcus and Rosie all take turns at telling stories. Junior also has a turn and tells a story about a treasure box. All the gang really liked this story.
"Let's have something to eat," said Junior.
"What shall eat?" said Su Lin.
"We've got beans, peas, bread, chicken soup, spaghetti and garlic bread." They all ate what they wanted and really enjoyed it. Then they got into their sleeping bags and went to sleep. In the morning, Mike and Sal woke up first. So they went to the river to catch some fish. When they got to the river they met some other children and they helped each other catch fish. They went into the water and caught fish. Mike kept falling in but in the end he caught a few fish. After half an hour they got out of the water and put the fish into a basket. Mike and Sal asked the other children if they'd like go to their camp with them. The other children said yes.
When they got back they woke up their friends and they cooked their fish.
"That fish was delicious, I want another one!" said David.
"Me too!" said Su Lin. The others also said they enjoyed eating the fish. When they had finished they sat around the fire and talked to their new found friends. They did some washing up and then said goodbye to the other children. After breakfast Mike, Sal and the rest of the gang went exploring in the woods surrounding the campsite. The woods were damp and spooky and very, very dark.
"Has everyone got their rucksacks and equipment?" said Mike.
"Yes!" Paul replied.
"Okay! Let's get going," said Sal.
They stepped into the dark, spooky, damp woods. They walked for a long time, looking around all the time.
Suddenly, they heard a noise behind them. They were scared and began to run. Then they stopped. They had come to a tree and there was a skeleton hanging from it. A box fell from it's hand. Junior picked it up and then opened it. In the box was a gold key with a diamond in the middle and an old map. They followed the map and came to a farm. Then Mike and Sal walked on to a village. They were starting to get scared. Sal imagined there was a enormous grizzly bear behind them with brown eyes and very long claws. They were getting hungry. Mike picked some berries off the bushes. He had taken a book out his rucksack and looked first to see if they were poisonous. They had walked a long way and was starting to get very dark and bats were flying about.
Mike said, "Look at that dinosaur over there," pointing at a climbing frame in a playground. Mike, Sal and the rest of the gang went up to the dinosaur. They climbed up it's tail and onto it's back. They imagined that the dinosaur began to walk. They then slid down it's back. The sun was now starting to come out again. Mike and Sal went walking following the map towards a waterfall. They reached the waterfall. All of a sudden David jumped across a hole and through the waterfall into a cave. It was dark and gloomy. Everyone thought he had fallen down the hole because they couldn't see him. Then they heard a voice behind the waterfall. So, Paul jumped over the hole and discovered David in the cave. Then the rest of the gang joined them. Inside the cave it was very wet and slippy. Then Rosie, Marcus and Mike bumped into each other because it was so dark. Then they heard a noise. It got louder and louder and the gang began to get scared and huddled together. Except Mike, "Don't worry," he said, "it's only the wind."
Soon, they were wondering where the key went and what it was for? They kept looking and looking for a door. It was really hard to find in the dark and they were all very wet. The only person who wasn't looking was Sal. She loved cold showers and this water was absolutely freezing. Sal was running backwards and forwards through the waterfall.Suddenly they heard a scream and realised that Sal was not with them. She had fallen down a hole nearby. Sal was terrified and didn't know what to do. She was clinging on with all her might to a branch, but was extremely scared that she might fall. She thought she wouldn't see her family or friends again. The hole was dark, gloomy and very damp. Sal shivered as she swung from side to side. The rest of the gang started to help her. They used their hands, rope from their rucksacks and clothing. Some of them took off their shirts and tied them together, but that didn't help. They had done everything they could think of.
While Sal was still screaming, "HELP! Please help me!" Mike had an idea. He told the rest of the gang that somebody should go with him to find something that could help pull Sal up. Then Mike and Amandeep went off to find something. It took lots and lots of searching, but finally they found something. They found a very long branch. They quickly ran back and all of the gang tugged hard and eventually pulled Sal up. She was very, very happy that they had rescued her. "I thought I was going to die," she said. After they had rescued Sal they went back through the waterfall and into the cave. They wandered around the cave looking for somewhere where the key would fit.
At last Rosie found something. She kept on feeling it and found it was a secret door. She started jumping up and down with joy.
"What's going on? Why are you so happy?" everybody was asking. After a lot of calming down she came round and said. "I've found a secret door." Everyone was happy. They all pushed the door open and fell. They went one after another down a slide for a bumpy ride. When they reached the bottom there in front of them was a treasure chest. It was open and inside they could see jewels, money made from gold and silver. They were happy and started to have a closer look. They were that happy that they started throwing it in the air. After they had calmed down they looked around the cave. They couldn't see a way out. Mike was looking on the floor but couldn't find anything. The walls of the cave were just plain rock. It was getting cold and the gang were feeling tired and scared. Sal and Mike were fed up so they shouted and shouted, but there was no reply. They closed the treasure chest, tied some rope around it and sat down. They listened and they could hear some birds. Mike stood up and started pushing the walls but nothing happened. Sal got up and she tried, but still nothing.
They really wanted to go home now. Then Mike tripped over a brick and fell on a leaver. The wall opened and they could see outside. They picked up the chest, walked through the hole and went back to the camp. When they got back they began to pack their bags and they said goodbye to the other children they met. They got on their bikes and skateboards and went back home. They threw their bags into Mike's house and then went to the museum.
When they got there they rushed inside and showed the treasure to the owner. He said that the treasure was worth lots of money. He took the treasure off them and gave them thousands of pounds.
Later, they were on the television news and had their pictures in the newspaper. They were famous for finding the treasure. They were proud of themselves and felt pleased that they could help the museum.
